GM Update and Action- January 24, 2019

Jerry Dias

Greetings,

This week, members of our union took decisive action and began a direct action at GM headquarters in Oshawa.

Attached to this email you will find yesterday’s update from the Local 222 committee, where you will see the new information about the week’s action and ongoing issues with GM’s refusal to live up to the collective agreement.

Thank you for your continued activism and support for workers affected by a closure.

Unifor head rules out boycott in campaign to save GM Oshawa

by The Canadian Press

The head of Unifor has ruled out a potential boycott of General Motors in the campaign to save the Oshawa Assembly Plant.

Speaking at a union rally in front of GM Canada’s Oshawa office, Unifor president Jerry Dias says the union will never call for an outright boycott of GM products.

Last week, Unifor’s Quebec director Renaud Gagne said there were no plans to boycott GM, but that it may be a solution the union will have to consider.

The union also released an Ekos Research poll last week noting that 45 per cent of Canadians support an outright boycott of GM.

Dias says he supports the products union members make at GM in Canada, but objects to the company’s shifting of production to Mexico.

He says the union will have a press conference on Friday as it continues its fight to save the Oshawa plant that GM plans to shut down later this year.

Union Memo – BTS Weekends Off

Union Memo – BTS Weekends Off

TO: ALL ONTARIO BTS LOCALS AND NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVES
January 18, 2019
Sisters and Brothers,
Re: Union Memo – BTS Weekends Off
Over the past few weeks we have been receiving calls regarding the number of Saturdays that a RFT3 can work in an eight week schedule in relationship with vacation weeks. We thought it best to clarify in a memo to everyone and dispel any contradictions being raised or applied.
The first thing to remember, as per article 16.02 e) iii , the language sets a limit on the number of weekends that an RFT3 can be scheduled to work. The confusion seems to be that some members are looking at the language backwards and think they have two guaranteed weekends off out of eight weekends. Further thinking that if they have a weeks’ vacation in an eight week schedule that they are now entitled to four weekends off. This is not the case.
