Pink Shirt Day is Back!

pinkshirtday-shareable-en-2019

Unifor proudly recognizes Pink Shirt Day, an annual event on the last Wednesday in February where Canadians across the country come together to support the important commitment to a safe, harassment-free environment at work and school.

Pink Shirt Day began in Berwick, Nova Scotia in 2007 when David Shepherd, Travis Price and a large group of students decided to defend their peer who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, they, and many students turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts.

All members are encouraged to participate in Pink Shirt Day, which happens on Wednesday, February 27 this year. Wearing a pink shirt on that day is both an important statement of solidarity to those who have been bullied.  By wearing a pink shirt, and sharing a message or the Unifor image online, you can help to show that the union is committed to speaking out against bullying and harassment.

More than 200 Unifor activists storm Canadian Auto Show

GM Toronto Auto show 1

TORONTO – Visitors to the Canadian Auto Show in Toronto this weekend were greeted by Unifor members and encouraged to join Unifor’s campaign to boycott GM vehicles made in Mexico.

More than 200 workers and retirees from the Oshawa Assembly Plant, and feeder plants Lear, Inteva and other Unifor units showed up at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Saturday wearing #SaveOshawaGM t-shirts.

“I am so proud of these fearless activists who will stop at nothing in the fight to convince GM it is not too late to reverse its plans for the Oshawa plant,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President.

“Sell here? Build here!” chanted the group of Unifor workers and retirees, as they raised awareness in the middle of GM’s display. “We will not give up and we will not be intimidated by GM or anyone else.

That is why we held a mini rally right where GM would take notice, in the heart of the auto show,” said Colin James, President, Local 222.

Activists also handed out leaflets that explain how to support the union’s efforts to stop the closure of the Oshawa Assembly plant and save 24 thousand good Canadian jobs.

Canadian consumers are urged to pledge to boycott all GM vehicles made in Mexico but signing up at SaveOshawaGM.

Bell Sales breakthrough to #EndStackedRanking

Staement

February 11, 2019
To: All Bell locals/units across Canada
Re: Bell Sales breakthrough to #EndStackedRanking
Members,
Today, after extensive campaigning, member mobilization, a CRTC submission, an employee survey and hundreds of grievances, our Unifor Bell Sales bargaining committee is introducing language for ratification that eliminates the stacked ranking system of performance management.
The company has committed to the creation of a new predictable, individual merit-based system without the use of stacked ranking. As a result, members will no longer be pitted against one another for the purpose of determining who is placed on coaching for success.
Further to this development, the company has committed to discussions with Unifor on the use of stacked ranking in other Bell units in the coming weeks. Bell Canada appears to be open to making significant changes to address this very pressing issue for our members across many bargaining units.

Letter to Bell units re elimination of stacked ranking

In solidarity,
Jerry Dias,                                    Renaud Gagné,
Unifor National President        Unifor Québec Director
