Commemoration of the Quebec City Mosque Massacre

On January 29, 2017, six worshippers were killed, and many others injured during evening prayer at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City.

Their names were: Azzeddine Soufiane, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Ibrahima Barry and Abdelkrim Hassane.

Unifor rejects racism in all forms and remains committed to continuing to work vigilantly against Islamophobia and all hate-based violence in the workplace and the community.

To commemorate this tragic attack, communities across Canada are hosting vigils to remember the victims and stand in solidarity with the community.

In solidarity,

Christine Maclin

OSHAWA- Unifor members are currently engaged in an action at General Motors headquarters in Oshawa in response to the company’s continued resistance to upholding the commitments of the 2016 collective agreement.

“The solidarity shown today proves once again, Unifor members are united in our resistance to corporate greed,” said Colin James, President of Unifor Local 222. “This union is a family. We are fiercely united in our support of one another, and of the Oshawa auto community.”

The head of Unifor has ruled out a potential boycott of General Motors in the campaign to save the Oshawa Assembly Plant.

Speaking at a union rally in front of GM Canada’s Oshawa office, Unifor president Jerry Dias says the union will never call for an outright boycott of GM products.

Last week, Unifor’s Quebec director Renaud Gagne said there were no plans to boycott GM, but that it may be a solution the union will have to consider.

The union also released an Ekos Research poll last week noting that 45 per cent of Canadians support an outright boycott of GM.

Dias says he supports the products union members make at GM in Canada, but objects to the company’s shifting of production to Mexico.

He says the union will have a press conference on Friday as it continues its fight to save the Oshawa plant that GM plans to shut down later this year.
