Bargaining Bulletin Update #7: Bell Clerical workers deliver strike mandate

Dear Members,

Your Bargaining Committee is happy to report the results of the strike vote. More than two-thirds of the membership voted, with 65% voting in favour of strike action.

This historic vote will send Bell Canada a clear, direct message to bring a better deal to the table. In this round of negotiations we’re clear that it’s Our Bell, and Our Jobs.

This does not mean that a strike is imminent or even probable in the immediate future. We will meet with the company and a federal conciliator from Monday June 20 – Thursday June 23, 2022. Cooling-off periods and additional rounds of conciliation may also be required.

We remain committed to negotiating a great deal for members at the bargaining table.

With movement still needed on each of your key priorities, we’re hoping that Bell take this as a message they need to meet members’ demands and offer a significant pay increase, a fair teleworking policy, and commit to an enforceable floor of employment to keep the bargaining unit healthy.

Thank you to each member who participated in Local Union meetings, the telephone town halls, strike vote meetings, and who cast their ballot in this vote.

Your careful deliberation and the trust that you have put in your bargaining committee makes our solidarity and our power stronger.

Your mobilization committee will keep in touch with even more ways to stay involved, including sharing the union’s videos about bargaining issues, released in both Ontario and Quebec.

In solidarity,

Bell clerical workers issue historic strike mandate

Bell clerical bargaining committee

TORONTO– Unifor members in the Bell Canada clerical unit returned a strike mandate on Sunday June 19, just ahead of this week’s negotiations with the company.

The approximately 4,200 workers in the bargaining unit perform clerical and other duties, and live and work across Ontario and Quebec. More than two-thirds of the membership voted, with 65% voting in favour of strike action.

“Workers have witnessed their own household costs skyrocketing at the same time as Bell’s profits hit record highs. In these negotiations, we’re looking for real wage increases,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer. “Canadians learned in the past two years just how much we all rely on the work of telecom workers. It’s time for Bell to negotiate an agreement that recognizes clerical workers’ contributions.”

Workers are seeking a fair pay increase, continuing to work-from-home, and an enforceable floor of employment in the bargaining unit. Some members spoke out about bargaining issues in videos released ahead of the strike vote.

Bell has engaged in a concerted effort to downsize the bargaining unit through attrition, contracting out and other forms of erosion.

The bargaining committee declared an impasse on May 9, 2022, which began the federal conciliation process. The two parties will meet with a federal conciliator beginning on Monday June 20, 2022.

“Unifor is committed to reaching a fair contract for these members. I hope that Bell received the message of this strike vote loud and clear, clerical workers are demanding better,” said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor Quebec Director.

The previous collective agreement expired on November 30, 2021.

Bell clerical and associated workers are represented in Quebec by Unifor Locals 6000, 6001, 6002 and 6003, and in Ontario by Unifor Locals 6004, 6005, 6006, 6007, 6008 and 37. All locals are represented in the bargaining caucus.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future

NEW CBA ratification – Retro pay for wages and Per Diem

Sisters and Brothers

Many of you have reached out regarding retroactive pay for wages…the bargaining committee has dealt with the issue.

Many technicians on loan may have not received the new Per Diem rate while on loan out of their common locality for hotel stays since ratification of the CBA in Ontario, this has also been addressed with the company and bargaining committee for resolve.

Note – A communication from HR quoted below was sent on June 14 2022

To: All team members in Ontario
From: The Human Resources team
Hello,

As a result of the renewal of the Collective Agreement in Ontario, we would like to inform you that the salary and daily allowance increases related to transfers for technicians, logistics attendants and cable pullers will take effect on July 6 and be paid retroactively to May 8.

We will continue to keep the team informed as more changes are implemented and will provide a grid with the respective timelines.

Please note that the bargaining process for the Collective Agreement in Québec does not affect the renewal of the Collective Agreement in Ontario.

Thank you.
